The Phoenician Golf Club
About
The Phoenician Golf Club reopened in the fall of 2018 after a massive redesign and renovation by Scottsdale-based architect Phil Smith. The new 18-hole layout replaces the original 27-hole routing. Every hole is new, featuring TifEagle grass greens and tees, fairways and rough that are 419 Bermuda grass. The golf shop has been expanded as well, and the Club Car golf carts have been outfitted with the "Shark Experience" - a new golf technology with a high-definition touch screen and built-in speakers for playing music and watching live sports, news and entertainment, along with GPS yardage.

Canyon Course...tee off towards Camelback Mtn. Photo submitted by u000001276894 on 09/24/2012
its usually better
greens are still pretty bumpy, the ball bounced all day for all of us. also, the pace of play was horrible. no marshall to keep the six (two groups who kept joining up) ahead of us on any kind of pace. hopefully it was just a bad day, normally this course is better.
Greens are Slow & Rough
After aerating the greens some weeks ago, they are still rough and very SLOW. Tee boxes and fairways were in generally good shape. Sand traps only had a dusting of sand on the surface, making it a challenge to escape with any control. The worst part of the day was the pace of play, with a 4:35 hour round at 115* and NO ranger trying to motivate the six players ahead (a foursome and twosome) who wanted to play as a sixsome. Unacceptable….
Great course
I have always wanted to play here and it happened. I will be back.
Nice place
Everything was great except that they had recently plugged the greens. It made putting close to impossible which takes out some of the joy. The green to tee can be a big distance. You almost need a car to get from 9 to 10.
Great Course
This is a short course, but has all the bells and whistles. One of the top 3 courses my group and I had played with few people in front or behind us on our time on the course. Beautiful views and perfect playing surface!
New course
This is the first time I played this course. I found it to be very playaable and enjoyable. Despite the summer hear the course was in great shape.
Fun And Enjoyable….But….
Let’s start with the good.
The golf shop was great and the folks who checked us in were great. We laid down our clubs near the bay drop and they were loaded on a cart that was funny equipped with GPS ready to head to the range where there was complementary range balls.
The fairways and greens were all nicely mowed with very few dead spots. Greens rolled smooth and the rough were short and thick giving nice lies just off the greens and fairways.
Overall I would say the course condition was a 7/10. Pretty solid for a course that gets a ton of play. Also, the GPS was a must. There are a number of blind shots and bunkers to navigate so have accurate GPS built into the cart was really great.
Now let’s talk about the not so great things….
First, the range was a ways down the road from where you check in and the tee grounds on the range were fairly beat up. Not a huge deal, but it would have been nice to hit off more lush grass when warming up for the round. Secondly, there were a large number of unrepaired pitch marks on the green which is really sad considering despite that the greens were in fantastic shape. Third, there are a number of blind shots which made it difficult to not hit into the group in front of you, as well as, be hit into by the group behind you. If pace of play was not an issue, maybe this wouldn’t be on my list. But that brings me to issue number 4.
The pace of play on the back 9 was equal to a 5 hour round. Which is no fun at all. There should have been better marshaling being done to keep the pace of play to 4 hours or less.
Finally, the course layout was aweful. Tees and greens were very spaced out at times, and although there we good signage leading from one green to the next tee, it definitely hinders the character of this course. It doesn’t not feel as serene as you would hope by the photos given online. Sadly this course is a typical resort course that seems squeezed in by its surrounding as opposed to beautiful desert/mountain golf.
All in all I would say if you don’t care about those things, and want a course in solid condition, friendly staff, and don’t want to break the bank, this is a place is one you can and will enjoy.
Excellent, as always!
I play here every time I come to AZ. I love the course and the staff is always extremely friendly! Thanks again Phoenician!
Layout and staff
This is a first class facility from staff to the course. Easily my favorite course in Phoenix
Desert Getaway
Awesome resort course. Not going to kill you. Beautiful surroundings. Only complaint is that I accidentally left my breakfast sandwich because I had to rush to tee off. When I went back to get it, it wasn't there. The person working at the course restaurant didn't seem to care and at those prices I wasn't going to buy another one. 😒😒
