Papago Golf Course is conveniently situated just a few minutes from downtown Phoenix though you would never be able to tell with the peace and seclusion provided by the course's location in Papago Park. The golf course sits at the base of Papago Buttes, past the rugged red rocks you can see Phoenix skyline. The course was designed by William Francis Bell, whom you may know for Torrey Pines in San Diego. The challenging layout features undulating greens framed with strategically placed bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding. Water hazards appear on a few holes as well. It's a tough but straightforward layout that is still playable for a range of skill levels. Since opening in 1963, Papago has hosted numerous events including the U.S. Amateur Public Links Championship and Phoenix Open Qualifying.

Gonna be very nice!

Hard to judge completely as one hole was closed and several others with construction related issues. But the holes that are done are in great condition and the update to others looks promising. Will look forward to coming back when the remodel is done. Range is nice and Lou’s bar and grill is a great place for lunch and drinks. Staff very friendly and facilities excellent. Expect 5 stars soon.

Great Course - Under Renovation

I hadn't played here for 15 years but it's a very fun and beautiful course and pretty challenging with numerous deep bunkers.

Papago is under renovation currently so you can expect to have some shortened holes and temporary greens, etc. The part of the course that was still playable was very well manicured. Greens were in great shape. It's still pretty fun but it will be top notch after the renovations are done.

Staff was excellent!

DO NOT PLAY THIS "COURSE"!!!

The Arizona golfers who used to call this course "home", can probably still remember a classic Billy Bell layout. For the those who never had the chance to play it prior to the butcher job that was done on it 15 or so years ago, you're being cheated. Aside from the lack-luster attempt to "improve" the course through the "redesign", the course is in complete disarray. The work that's being done on the course, which includes the closure of half the holes, is a necessary evil...I guess. But, the fact that they are still asking people to pay the ludicrous fee to play at a track that should be paying people to play there instead, is comical. The staff at the course has either told GolfNow to NOT tell people that half the course is off limits in order to keep people coming, or their they just plain ignorant...probably both. However, if you want to pay for a course that is just a fraction of what the original Billy Bell version was, then by all means, have at it. They are doing a huge disservice by continuing to call it "Papago", it's simply not the same. Also, the corporate mentality of the staff is a sad addition to the course. The friendly and welcoming atmosphere used to be a very genuine experience that I and many of "the regulars" enjoyed. It had that great "muni" feel about it...the true Arizonans who used to play it back when it was great understand what I saying. It used to be sacred ground, and now it's part of corporate America...some would call that "progress", but at the same time, it could also be called a tragedy.

Come on golfnow

Hey golfnow, how come there was no headsup about Papago being completely under construction and a joke to take out of town friends to??? The staff said they have told you guys to post it, but I saw nothing... I was embarrassed for suggesting papago and also making my friends pay $60 to play this course which is usually worth 60 but was worth about 15 due to the conditions... golfnow warns us when the greens are punched or overseed is happening.... please put a warning about papagos conditions to save the next host the embarrassment. Im sure they would appreciate that.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION DO NOT PLAY

IF YOU VALUE MONEY AND TIME AND YOU ARE A DECENT GOLFER WHO ACTUALLY KEEPS SCORE THEN DO NOT PLAY THIS GOLF COURSE UNTIL THEY FINISH CONSTRUCTION AND RENOVATION. Sorry for the caps, but I need to make it clear that they have piles of dirt and rock all over the cart paths and fenced-off areas where they are building a fantastic golf course in the next few months. Right now the temporary greens are just stuck in the middle of the fairways on 4 different par 4s and it makes the course an unfit golf course for real golfers. If you want to bring your girlfriend out here and fool around and hit the ball around and have fun without keeping score then by all means come here and goof off because the challenge is a joke. Bring any first-time golfers here to learn but if you have a single digit handicap you will hate yourself for getting stuck here and not really having to putt out on 4 holes because it's impossible. Not greens, but just grass in an old fairway with a flag in it. I'm 100 positive this will be a fantastic golf course once they have completed the renovation, but right now, don't come here if you are a passionate or serious player, you will be disappointed.

UNDER CONSTRUCTION DO NOT PLAY, YET

I am surprised they are getting away with selling tee times when 4 holes are shortened and have a temporary green made in the middle of fairways. I feel short changed and I led on. I was not warned nor was it mentioned that your course is under a full renovation and is not ready to play a full 18 of real quality golf. Why are you charging full rack? I recognize you will be awesome when it complete but right now it's a massive mess out there. The temp greens are a joke and the par 4s at 200 tp 240yds are a joke. I will not give anyone a reccomendation to play here until this massive overhaul is complete.

Under construction

Course was restricted to first 9 holes and 2 of them holes have temporary greens. Which in all honesty, we’re no more than a circle painted on the fairway with a hole and flag. Not puttable.

The prettier side of the course was not available. Value was so so considering the hole selection and the poor choice of no putting greens on holes 6 and 9.

Unfortunate shape for such a cool course

They're doing construction on the course, and they called us to let us know the afternoon before, which I definitely appreciated, but this place is playing much more like a par 60 right now and should be even more discounted than they have it currently. I have heard lots of good things about this place and we definitely caught it in the roughest of shapes, there are virtually no 'cart paths' and a third of the course is temporary tee boxes and greens.

I hope to come back when the construction was finished and experience the real deal because we might as well have played rolling hills down the street.

Under construction and a mess—but still full rate

Played this morning. Knew they were having construction, but no idea how extensive. Paid $55 to play (full rate), and it absolutely isn’t worth that right now. Three “temporary greens” are mowed down spots in the fairway about 25 feet in diameter with a flag in the middle. Completely unputtable. This is a great track, but won’t be back in shape until after overseed.

Surprisingly not impressed

Had high hopes for this course based on previous trip to the driving range, but ended up being disappointed. Arrived for our tee time and was told that the course was under renovation, which was not posted online anywhere.. To make matters worse, once we found out about the renovation, there was no offer of discounted green fees…still charging full price, which was crazy since we only had the option to play the front 9 twice! The temporary greens on 2 of the holes, the cart GPS that wasn’t accurate, and the grounds crew working on some of the holes while you were playing just added to the disappointment. Overall the staff was friendly, but at this point, the course had already put us in a “mood”.

Under construction!

Great course but this might not be the best time to play it. It would have been very helpful to know the level of maintenance currently underway at the course BEFORE I booked a tee time. Temp greens 9 and 18. Ground under repair EVERYWHERE. Adjusted par to 69 from normal 72. Several holes cart path only. When I say construction, I'm not talking about punching the greens or laying sod, I mean bulldozers parked on the course, whole sections around the greens farmed for sod. Again, great course but now is not the time to play it.

A little too expensive for what you get

I appreciate the fact that the course remains open while undergoing renovations, particularly to prepare for next year's Pac 12 championship, but there were two temporary greens and the other greens were so slow and bumpy it was impossible to get a true read or roll. Along with the cart restrictions and slow play in front of us, I feel $40 would have been more appropriate

Back nine is closed; course needs better signage

This was my first time playing Papago. Had I known the back none was closed, I wouldn’t have played here. Also, the cart has GPS that shuts down when you get too close to certain boundaries, but the signage is horrible for cart paths and where you can or can’t go. One time I was on the dirt cart path, but I guess I was too close to the grass and the cart locked up…I was literally on the make shift cart path and couldn’t go anywhere.

Definitely won’t be playing this course again until all the renovations are done.

Papago gets worse every year

The course was torn up, because of all the construction going on. If we had known that we were going to have to play the back nine twice, we would have gone elsewhere. The greens and fairways were awful condition. You would think that if you only had nine holes open , you take better care of it.

Under Construction

Did not see any construction warnings when making the reservation. Arrived at the course to find out 2 Temporary Greens, greens in sub-par conditions-fairways in need of love and no ranger on the course controlling slow play.

This to appears to be a very nice course when there is no construction; but right now; it is not worth the greens fee being charged.
