Grand Canyon University Golf Course
About
Grand Canyon University Golf Course (formerly known as Maryvale Municipal Golf Course) offers an 18-hole track designed by Ted Robinson, Sr. and built in 1961. The par-71 golf course measures 7,269 yards from the championship tees and is open year-round.
The Bermuda grass Grand Canyon University Golf Course gets plenty of shade during the summer, thanks to several onsite trees, and features flat and wide fairways.
The fourth hole, for one example, is a 160-yard par-3 where you'll have to shoot over the water - and past the brick wall that separates the green from the water.

Elevated greens
Elevated greens and pot bunkers made it really
challenging Bunkers need more sand as it is
hard
NO SAND
This location has no sand in the bunkers. Slow pace of play. Will not be returning to this course anytime soon. GCU should be ashamed to put its name on this course. Just call it Maryville again. The clubhouse and grill are both nice.
Waited On Almost Every Shot. Two Foursomes On Many Tees
When we checked in, thirty minutes before our scheduled tee time, we were informed that the tee times were running ten to fifteen minutes late. No problem with that. While we were on the third green, we saw that the group in front of us on the fourth tee was ordering more beverages from the cart attendant, and taking cell phone pictures with the assistance of the cart attendant. One of that group had already taken his shirt off for the pictures and proceeded to tee off and leave the tee without putting his shirt back on.
The front nine took two hours and twenty minutes. We waited on almost every shot and when we arrived at most of the front nine tees, the foursome in front of us had not yet teed off, only sometimes because they were waiting for the group in front of them. There were many range balls on the ninth hole that were hit over the nets. Near the ninth green, the Ranger informed us that there was a "Shotgun" tournament on the course that would be done shortly and that the pace of play should be quicker on the back nine.
We played four holes on the back nine in one hour and twenty minutes. We continued to wait on every shot. After thirteen holes, the pace of play was for the round would be greater than five hours. After waiting on the fourteenth tee for fifteen minutes and the group in front of us had still not teed off, we decided to leave the course.
We shared our experience of the day with the staff in the Pro Shop. We have played more than twenty five different courses in the Phoenix / Scottsdale area over more than fifteen years and have never had a worse experience.
Made me pay double cart price to ride alone And slowest round ever
I was told I have to pay an extra cart fee to ride alone since they were low on carts. The other single had a pull cart and was walking. I asked how he was suppose to ride with me with his pull cart and the starter just said “you paid extra so you are good”. The three people I played with and the group behind me quit at 9(single joined me on the back nine) because of the pace of play, probably because they overbooked tee times which would account for low carts maybe. Round took just under 6 hours. Just be ready to wait around and if you are a single I recommend walking or you might have to pay for the cart twice.
A Pretty Good Course!
My husband enjoyed the long holes and the open layout makes it easy to follow & find your golf balls. If it’s peaceful & serene you’re looking for, this is not the course for you.
Too many sand traps with poor maintenance.
Sand needs to be fluffed up! Especially since we were in them constantly!
Encanto
Great course, really good shape. I try to play it every time I am out here.
Lots of deep bunkers difficult for women. Greens good but holes were old and ragged on edges. Crowned greens left pretty good shots well away from green
GCU Course is a good course to walk or ride a cart
First time playing GCU course, good layout with good mix of hole designs. Greens were rolling very good. pace of play was excellent until last 3 holes, then it slowed down a bit. Rate for out of towners is higher than expected for the quality of this course.
Average golf course
In a bad area…decent course in general but it doesn’t have the wow factor like many courses in Arizona
Great layout…. Beat to $$$$
Such a beautiful set up, not sure why they let it get beat up so bad around the greens. Any chip from off the green is a dusty tight lie. no extra water is what it looks like. Fairways are great and greens are hard, no ball marks on shots.
GCU sand
Way too many deep sand traps. All holes look the same. Ground hard and sloped so that good shots roll into traps. All 4 players in group stated there was no reason to play course again.
